The Early History of White’s Illusion

نویسنده

چکیده

The illusion that is now commonly referred to as ‘White’s illusion’ involves changes in the lightness of the mid-grey test elements that replace sections of the black or white bars of a black–white square–wave grating. This paper describes the discovery of White’s illusion; an attempt to explain it in terms of assimilation theory; the interest it has generated amongst vision researchers; the subsequent discovery of dotted versions of the illusion; and the earlier discovery by other researchers of coloured versions.

1. White’s effect in lightness, color and motion

In White’s (1979) illusion of lightness, the background is a square-wave grating of black and white stripes (Fig. 1a). Grey segments that replace parts of the black stripes look much lighter than grey segments that replace parts of the white stripes. Assimilation from flanking stripes has been proposed, the opposite of simultaneous contrast. We use colored patterns to demonstrate that the perce...

A possible low-level explanation of "temporal dynamics of brightness induction and White's illusion"

Based upon physiological observation on time dependent orientation selectivity in the cells of macaque’s primary visual cortex together with the psychophysical studies on the tuning of orientation detectors in human vision we suggest that time dependence in brightness perception can be accommodated through the time evolution of cortical contribution to the orientation tuning of the ODoG filter ...

Brief presentations reveal the temporal dynamics of brightness induction and White’s illusion

We measured the timecourse of brightness processing by briefly presenting brightness illusions and then masking them. Brightness induction (brightness contrast) was visible when presented for only 58 ms, was stronger at short presentation times, and its visibility did not depend on spatial frequency. We also found that White's illusion was visible at 82 ms. Together, these results suggest that ...

Fiscal Illusion in Iranian Economy Emphasizing the Five-Dimensional Indicators and the NARDL Approach

The phenomenon of fiscal illusion has always been an intriguing topic in the public finance literature. Fiscal illusion is a concept in which misinterpretation of fiscal parameters and tax expenses and liabilities lead to bias in budgetary decision making at all levels of the government. The current research presents an empirical analysis of the fiscal illusion in the Iranian economy, using fiv...

The Tax and Petroleum Revenue Effect on Iran’s Public Expenditures (1994–2015), Employing Fiscal Illusion Approach

I ncreased expenditures and the government size is an important issue in public sector economics. In this regard, various theories have been developed in order to justify the reasons for the public expenditure growth, and the theories have been empirically tested. One of the outlooks explaining the government expenditures growth and the economy size, is fiscal illusion approach. According ...
